Midnight Massacre

Driving around a city at night can produce its fair share of tragic experiences. Personally I haven’t had anything too memorable from those times. Well, except for one odd phenomenon that has always happened to me. It seems that randomly street lights will go out when I pass them. It still happens to this day only less frequently since I don’t live near a city. Weird.

But that’s not the focus of today's story. This is a far more sinister setting.

It is a country road in the dark; particularly after a good rain. The road ahead is mirror like. It’s only me and my Soul mate. I get lost in the thought that I haven’t seen any signs of human life for a few miles. I ponder that loneliness. Then, with my headlights beaming as if they are the spotlight in a Broadway show and without warning, it happens. From the side of the road, which has now become a stage, he leaps gracefully and majestically into the light. His long legs are stretched beneath him and his tiny arms are stretched out to the stars. He most probably has a small froggy smile and his audience is croaking from the black abyss. He makes his final, unforgettable performance. A dramatic thud on the bumper echoes through my Soul.

My heart breaks every single time.
