Among some of the things on the verge of extinction are home phones, film cameras & thank you cards. I could almost go out on a limb and say thank you’s of any kind but that's maybe a bit premature..

We recently had the joyous task of ordering high school graduation announcements along with all the other lovely things necessary to commemorate this achievement. On the list of temptations were some rather pricey Thank You cards; complete with shiny school logos. We discussed it and opted to shop for some more personal ones with things like cats or cute fonts. At the time I hadn’t really given it much thought but later it dawned on me that maybe these things weren’t readily available anymore. After all, it had been a good long while since I had found a Thank You card in my mailbox and the last ones I added to my collection had been purchased quite some time ago. Thankfully, haha, I did find that they are still sold in stores and I was pleasantly surprised at the variety to choose from. Particularly amusing were the ones that you just fill in the blank. I am hopeful that these are intended for children as a teaching tool. Then came the question of if Thank You cards are so easily attainable, could it be that my mail person has been delivering cards that are meant for me to someone else?! That must be it.

As with my older two daughters, my soon-to-be high school graduate loves stationary products. She loves them so much so that it isn’t an uncommon occurrence to find her in the aisle at the store sniffing the paper in a journal or notebook. (that is a whole other blog) She is more than delighted to have to shop for cute paper products that she can write in. This makes me happy! I have just finished making her a little pouch thing to hold her thank you cards, envelopes and stamps. From this day forward it will never be empty if for no other reason than she won’t be able to part with every single one of her note cards. They may have nose prints on them but that’s okay because it means that she will always have Thank You cards on hand if she needs one.

Back in the day I was taught that when you receive gifts from people for occasions such as graduations, weddings and new baby gifts that you sit down and write a meaningful little thank you note. And when you are given something such as a birthday or Christmas gift you give a real live verbal thank you. It is a relatively simple concept and a habit that is easy and affordable.

Recognizing that the times they are a changin', I looked for the newest way that gratitude is expressed in the ever so popular virtual world. Eureka! I found it! ty Did you miss it? ty That’s right! ty It’s virtually non existent but it is there if you watch for it. I try to watch for it.

In all seriousness, for me it was always a proud and satisfying moment to hear my children thank someone without being prompted to do so. Just the other day I heard my granddaughter say an unprompted, heartfelt thank you to a friend who had treated us to lunch and a fun day before we headed back to school. I loved it! It made me double proud because I know that her mom taught her how to do that!

So while it may be on the endangered list, my family and I are keeping gratitude alive one ty at a time!!
