I'll Fly Away

I’m thinking of Mom today. It’s hard to believe that it was 16 years ago, in the very early hours of the morning, as ‘I’ll Fly Away’ played on the player…that’s exactly what she did.

I'm thinking of how she encouraged me throughout my life. Everything from my earliest attempts at sewing to thinking I was going to be a famous bass guitarist to becoming a mom myself…she was always my biggest fan. Even when my poor life decisions didn’t make her happy, she somehow made sure I knew that she still loved me and it was going to be okay.

I'm thinking about the many ways she set a good example of how a Christian mom should live, and how fortunate I am that she did!

I'm thinking of how she thought of others before she thought of herself…bringing to mind her prayer journal’s last entry. Not a mention of herself but instead for her family…each by name.

I'm thinking about that even though we had a couple of differences, she turned out to be my very best friend. She was never the outdoorsy kind and I thrived on it. She loved her bright red lipstick…uh, no. She had no problem standing up in front of the entire congregation at church and singing: even an occasional solo…I am not capable of that and would rather eat worms. Yet not a day goes by that I don’t miss her early morning phone call to talk about absolutely nothing at all.

I'm thinking that I’m glad that she left me all this and so much more to think about!!
